Surviving Oppressive Institutions: the unseen costs of discrimination
Workshop description and topic
Experiencing discrimination and surviving it well is important for the staff and students of universities we work with and for ourselves too. The staff and the students we work with may find that there are discriminations that are built into the structure of the environment they work and/or study in. If people belong to religious organization there may also be oppressions that occur within their church or other religious body too. For people working in chaplaincy it is helpful to consider a trauma informed view of the experience others have of the organisations they belong to. It can also inform our own experience of any discriminations we may personally experience in our universities or from our sponsoring religious institution. In this workshop we will:
- use a human rights lens to consider religious life and university life;
- view the unseen costs of discrimination;
- consider effective ways to support others and ourselves to survive well.
